1. What's already there

Retrofitting mass or damping onto an existing lightweight partition — resilient channels, additional layers of drywall, mass-loaded vinyl — takes more labour and material than treating a surface that's already dense. The condition of the base build is usually the single biggest swing factor in any quote.
2. The acoustic rating you actually need
Two different metrics get specified for two different problems:
- Sound Transmission Class (STC) — how well a wall, door, or floor/ceiling assembly blocks sound from moving between two rooms. This is what matters for boardroom confidentiality or a party wall between tenants.
- Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) — how much a surface material absorbs sound within the same room, reducing echo and reverberation. This is what matters for an open-plan floor that feels loud and chaotic.

3. What the room is actually used for
A single enclosed meeting room needing speech privacy is a contained, well-defined scope. An open-plan floor with a general noise complaint often needs a mixed approach — ceiling baffles, wall panels, and sometimes flooring changes — because the noise source and the annoyance point aren't the same desk. Diagnosing the actual use case before pricing avoids over- or under-specifying the fix.
4. Area, geometry, and penetrations
Total wall, ceiling, and floor area sets the base quantity of material. Less obvious cost drivers include ceiling height, the number of doors and windows that need acoustic seals, and services — ducting, cable trays, sprinkler penetrations — that break up an otherwise continuous assembly and need to be detailed around individually.
5. Material and finish
