What drives home theatre soundproofing cost in Singapore

A home theatre isn't loud because of volume alone — bass frequencies travel through structure that a standard wall was never built to stop. Here's what actually sets the price of doing it properly, rather than a per-square-metre guess.

1. The STC target you're actually aiming for

STC 50 is the usual working minimum for a home theatre wall; STC 55 or higher is worth specifying where the adjoining space is a bedroom or another room in regular use. That target — not the room's floor area — is what sizes the assembly, because a higher STC number generally means more mass and more layering, which costs more in both material and installation time.

2. Mass, stiffness, and decoupling — not just extra drywall

Isolation gains from simply stacking on more drywall taper off quickly. Past a certain point, decoupling the assembly — breaking the rigid structural connection between the two room-facing layers, the "room within a room" principle — does more for the STC rating than adding another sheet of board. That usually means resilient channels, isolation clips, or a fully independent stud frame, each with a different cost and a different amount of floor space given up to achieve it.

3. The low-frequency problem a good STC number doesn't solve

Standard STC testing doesn't fully characterise the low end of the spectrum that a subwoofer or a bass-heavy film soundtrack produces. A wall can test well on paper and still transmit felt, structure-borne bass into the next room — which means a home theatre spec often needs mass and isolation aimed specifically at low frequencies (a heavier leaf, isolated subwoofer platform, or floating floor), on top of whatever the STC target already called for.

4. Existing structure, and whether the work needs approval

A concrete party wall in an HDB flat or condo starts from a very different baseline than a stud partition, which changes how much added mass and decoupling is needed to reach the same target. And because a home theatre build-out is renovation work, it sits inside the same approval framework as any other job — an HDB permit through a DRC-listed contractor, or MCST sign-off for a condo — which affects scheduling more than material cost. In short: home theatre soundproofing cost scales with the STC target, how much decoupling that target requires, and whether low-frequency bass needs its own isolation — not with room size alone. Two similarly-sized rooms can land at very different price points depending on what's already built and how much bass the system needs to contain.
